Hundreds of visitors beat the rain to enjoy gala day

DESPITE adverse weather conditions, the people of Barton beat the rain in May 1972 by turning out in their hundreds to visit the village's gala day.
The event was opened by BBC Midlands newsman Tom Coyne.
Not put off by the weather, the television presenter stopped long enough to sign autographs for smiling children and adults.
In comparing it with other galas he had recently opened, Mr Coyne praised the work that had been put into the Barton gala.
