BURTON Athletic Club youngsters brought back four medals from the recent England Under-15 and Under-17 Athletic Championships at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham - by far the club's best return.
-
Ewan Withnall's superb gold medal in the under-17 1500m topped the lot as he lopped six seconds off his personal best in 3.53.87.
He went into the race as the fourth fastest and Charlie Chambers, the fastest on paper, set the pace from the gun with Withnall and Freddie Gibson chasing him.
Chambers seemed to have a good lead but at the bell he slowed and Withnall took the lead.
Gibson then attacked and took the lead with 250m to go before Withnall accelerated back into the lead going into the home straight and held his rival off to the tape.
He had won at under-15 in the two previous years, so this made it three in a row in his first year at under-17.
There was a first national medal for Isla Rogers, who won silver in the under-17 javelin.
‘She had a foul on her first throw, then launched a big throw on her second attempt.
