VERY, very occasionally something extraordinary appears on screen: Gone With The Wind, The Singing Detective, Pride And Prejudice.
Likewise, in the theatre there are one-offs in a class of their own. This wonderfully imaginative production of Nick Stafford’s stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel War Horse, fits into that unique category.
There was stunning use of life-sized puppets created by the Handspring Puppet Company, Joey and Topthorn become real live animals in the eyes of the audience to such an extent that when Topthorn died, there were genuine tears, and when the brave, lame Joey was threatened with being shot cries of “No! No!” And, for light relief, a farmyard goose who threatened to take a piece out of anyone who got in their way.
