Sharp words City slated for needles clean-up response

HUNDREDS of needles were left scattered in a Bristol alleyway for weeks despite a worried neighbour alerting the council. James Steeds noticed the “dangerous” litter just off Gloucester Road on June 6, but it was only cleared recently.

Two yellow sharps bins had been dumped in a small alleyway next to the Betfred betting shop in Horfield, just metres from the pavement. One had tipped over and spilled hundreds of small needles and caps onto the ground, he said.

Mr Steeds immediately reported the matter to Bristol City Council, describing it as a “serious public safety issue” that required urgent attention, particularly due to its “proximity to the main footpath where small kids will be walking”. The council initially responded saying it could not act, although it has since confirmed that the mess has now been cleared.

He notified the council via X, formerly Twitter, and on Fix My Street. This is a website that members of the public can use to alert the council to issues such as broken street lighting, potholes and other street problems.
