Rise in TB cases sparks concern

HEALTH chiefs have called for vigilance following a notable increase in tuberculosis (TB) cases across the South West of England.

Data released yesterday by the UK Health Security Agency reveals TB notifications in the region grew 16 per cent in 2024, rising from 212 cases in the previous year to 246. While the regional rate of 4.2 per 100,000 population remains significantly below the national average of 9.4, the upward trend has prompted a call for heightened public awareness and rapid medical intervention.

Dr Chitra Arumugam, consultant in health protection at UKHSA South West, stressed that while the risk to the general population remains low, complacency is not an option.
