Review makes four suggestions

- KATHRYN ANDERSON

A review into the provision of additional support in Perth and Kinross schools has made four recommendations.

Councillors called for the review as the number of pupils identified with additional support needs (ASN) continues to rise.

There are currently 7008 pupils in the local authority who require some sort of additional support-equating to 39 per cent of the Perth and Kinross school population.

Perth and Kinross Council's Legal and Governance strategic lead Lisa Simpson wrote the review on behalf of the local authority's Scrutiny and Performance Committee. She said pupils' additional support needs could range from "not having English as your native language through to the most complex of needs".

The scope of the review was to determine how effective PKC was at making adjustments for pupils with additional support needs.

The review’s four recommendations were outlined at a meeting of the Scrutiny and Performance Committee on Wednesday, June 4.

They were:

• to ensure planning and assessment processes are put in place as soon as possible and are proactive, data-informed and tailored to individual needs
