Moves under way to get £300m Blackpool Central project back on track
Blackpool Gazette
|September 19, 2025
Anyone hoping for an arena will be disappointed, there isn't the resident population, nor visitor numbers to come even close to making this work.
-
If one thing this government has shown us, there is no magic money tree. No commercial enterprise will fund anything of this magnitude outside a major conurbation. Liverpool can't make their arena work with a regional population of 1.5 million. Why do people think Blackpool will get any special funding over places like Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, or Sheffield? It doesn't matter who runs the council, it is simply not viable, unless the residents of the town can fund it by raising council taxes. £300million would be a £4,200 one off cost for our 72,000 houses that pay rates, plus £400 per property per year to pay running costs.
