Inspiring Futures: Blackpool's pop-up science museum

As schools across Blackpool return this week, I've been thinking about the power of education to open up opportunity - and how we must do more to make that true for every child, in every subject.

Before the summer, I visited Blackpool Gateway Academy to see something extraordinary-a popup science museum created by 10-year-old Poppy Docherty.

Poppy has already earned a prestigious Gold CREST Award from the British Science Association - usually completed by 16 to 18-year-olds-for her research into why children in areas like ours don't see science as a real career path.

Poppy described parts of Blackpool as a "science desert" - where the nearest science museum is over 90 minutes away and schools often lack the resources for hands-on science learning.

Instead of accepting that missed learning opportunity, Poppy took action.
