Police are cleared over teens' deaths in chase
Birmingham Mail
|October 02, 2025
A POLICE chase was not to blame for a tragedy which claimed the lives of two teenagers after their car hit a tree in Birmingham, an official watchdog has ruled.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched a probe after two boys in a BMW, including the 16-year-old driver, died in a crash in the early hours of December 19 last year.
A West Midlands Police patrol car had tried to stop the BMW for speeding on Soho Road at around 2am. The IOPC established that officers pulled alongside the BMW at traffic lights and asked the driver to pull over, but the car made off into Sandwell Road. A short pursuit was ended after the BMW went on to the wrong side of a dual carriageway after joining the A4040, the IOPC said.
