Maddie Down finally breaks the five-metre barrier in the long jump at the World Championships

- By WILL JENNINGS

MADDIE Down banished her 100m demons with a brilliant personal best in the long jump at the World Championships in New Delhi.

The 17-year-old Selly Oak star was disappointed with her sprinting display on Sunday but bounced back in style with a memorable debut performance in the T38 long jump.

Down finally broke the long-awaited five-metre barrier with an attempt of 5.04m to see her finish fifth at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. British teammate Olivia Breen, who also claimed a personal best, came fourth as both athletes narrowly missed out on a medal.
