COUNCIL CHIEF DEFENDS ROAD SAFETY ACTIONS

- JANE HAYNES News Reporter

MORE than 228,000 Birmingham motorists have received a parking penalty charge in the last year after a clampdown by city council chiefs.

More drivers than ever before have been hit with fines for parking in contravention of restrictions, including on double yellow lines, or by overstaying in a car park or on the roadside.

Alum Rock Road and Stratford Road in Sparkhill are the hotspots, with more than 20 drivers every day caught out.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, Labour cabinet member for environment and transport, told a meeting of the full council that the record fines were among a range of ways the council was seeking to reduce harm on the city's roads.

"We have increased civil enforcement officer patrols in key hotspots, and between July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, we have issued 228,235 parking penalty notices (PCNs), an all-time high," he said.
