Long journeys with IBS can be a challenge, but there are ways to soothe your stomach stress

DON’T LET IBS UPSET TRAVEL PLANS

WHETHER you're heading off on your holiday, facing a long journey or commuting to work, managing IBS requires some careful planning.

April is IBS Awareness Month and to mark it, we had a chat with a top gastroenterologist to get the latest on this common condition.

He also shares his six top tips for managing symptoms, so you can travel with confidence.

WHAT IS IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is the most common disorder of the digestive system, with up to one third of the UK population experiencing symptoms, according to the Guts UK charity.

“Symptoms usually include a combination of abdominal pain, bloating, loose stools and constipation,” Dr Subramaniam Ramakrishnan, consultant physician and gastroenterologist at Nuffield Health, says.

IBS refers to a combination of symptoms related to the dysfunction of the digestive system - but no structural abnormalities exist and nothing abnormal is seen on tests.
