Council rejects 'inappropriate' signs planned for new shop

PLANS by Japanese clothing giant Uniqlo to install signs above its new Bullring store have been rejected by the council over concerns they would be distracting.

The three-floor shop will fill the empty Zara unit outside the mall following the retailer's move to the upper level of the old Debenhams inside.

Uniqlo bosses called the new store, which will mark the first Uniqlo opening in the Midlands, as 'a key strategic step' for the brand.

An opening date has yet to be revealed, however plans to revamp the unit have been hit by a setback after Birmingham City Council rejected the application to erect signage.

The bid requested permission to display seven illuminated signs showing the Uniqlo red-and-white branding on the ground and upper levels of the store's front and side.
