Council looks to cut pupils' travel costs

DUDLEY Council is planning to cut spiralling travel costs for school pupils which are expected to hit nearly £9million.
The authority had expected to spend just over £7m on supporting eligible pupils and students in getting to places of education in the current financial year but its latest predictions show the cost will be higher by almost £2m.
Dudley Cabinet members have approved a consultation on proposals to increase "efficiency and sustainability" in the authority's ability to deliver the service.
The suggestions include increasing parental contributions for students aged over 16, strengthening assessment of applications and removing discretionary awards.
