Crime fans were left stunned when bestselling author Ann Cleeves told a packed audience at the Bath Literature Festival that the next book in her hugely popular Vera Stanhope series will be the last.

Speaking at the Bath Guildhall, Ann announced that the 12th instalment in the detective series, which inspired the long-running ITV drama Vera, will mark the end of the road for the iconic character who is portrayed on screen by Brenda Blethyn.
