Verdict due tomorrow in Depardieu assault trial
Bangkok Post
|May 12, 2025
A Paris courtis set to deliver its verdict tomorrow in the sexual assault trial of French cinema icon Gérard Depardieu — a case that has gripped the country.
-
The ruling will coincide with the opening of the Cannes Film Festival and is expected to be one of the major talking points at the annual cinema showcase.
Mr Depardieu, who has appeared in more than 200 films and television series, is the most prominent figure caught up in France's reckoning with the #MeToo movement.
Around 20 women have accused him of inappropriate behaviour, but this is the first case to reach trial.
The case relates to allegations of sexual assault during the 2021 filming of Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters), directed by Jean Becker.
Nearly two months after the high-profile hearings concluded, the Paris Criminal Court will deliver its verdict from 10am tomorrow.
The plaintiffs — a 54-year-old set dresser, identified only as Amélie, anda 34-year-old assistant director — accuse the actor of sexual assault. Only Amélie is expected to be present in court for the ruling.
