Typhoon barrels toward Nan, risk of flooding high

Nan is expected to bear the heavy brunt from the approaching Typhoon Kajiki, with 15 northern and northeastern provinces on high alert for flash floods and landslides.

Authorities have raised Thailand's disaster preparedness to the highest level as the typhoon gathers strength before being expected to bring heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides across the North and Northeast later this week.

Seree Supratid, director of the Climate Change and Disaster Center at Rangsit University and vice president of the National Disaster Warning Council Foundation, posted an early-morning update on his Facebook page, warning that Nan faces the highest risk.

There is a 10% chance that rainfall in the province could exceed 500 millimetres, he said.
