Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra confirmed Thailand's readiness to defend its sovereignty in light of recent border tensions with Cambodia but emphasised that peaceful means must remain the country's first priority, amid growing public sentiment that the Thai leadership appears weaker than its Cambodian counterpart.

No compromise on sovereignty

Speaking after yesterday's cabinet meeting, Ms Paetongtarn said the cabinet discussed the escalating situation along the Thai-Cambodian border, particularly in the aftermath of a clash at Chong Bok in Nam Yuen district — a disputed border area in Ubon Ratchathani province — on May 28, resulting in one Cambodian soldier being killed.

The premier urged unity among Thais, stressing that national solidarity is essential at such times.

“What matters most now is not domestic political divisions or assessments of government or military performance,’ she said. “This is a matter that requires a collective national effort. Thai people must stand together.

“In times of international tension, the nation must be united in order to have the strength to engage in dialogue, negotiations, or, if necessary, defence. Unity and national love are the true foundations of our strength,’ the prime minister added.

When asked how the government is responding to the situation, she said it is taking the matter seriously and acting decisively. “The preservation of our sovereignty is both vital and nonnegotiable,” she said.
