Migrant families protest on Mother's Day

MEXICO CITY: Families separated by the US-Mexico border held a demonstration on both sides of the boundary on Saturday, after US President Donald Trump's hardline anti-migrant policies forced the cancellation of a planned Mother's Day reunion event.

The US military last week established a controlled zone in Texas along the southern border, where troops are authorised to detain people crossing illegally.

The creation of the zone prompted officials to cancel the annual “Hugs, Not Walls” event, organised since 2016 by the advocacy group Border Network for Human Rights.

The gathering, scheduled for Saturday — one day before Mother's Day — was intended to reunite undocumented migrants living in the United States with family members in Mexico for a brief but emotional meeting.
