Ex-agent on trial in Russia spying case

A former Austrian intelligence official went on trial yesterday, charged with allegedly handing over sensitive devices and selling secret information to Russia over several years.

The case is the latest to emerge from a wide-ranging investigation that began in 2024 and centres on former agent Egisto Ott.
Mr Ott, 63, faces multiple charges, including abuse of office, corruption and espionage to the detriment of Austria. He has denied all accusations.
According to the indictment seen by AFP, his actions risked causing "serious damage" to Austria's reputation among friendly intelligence services.
