EU to vote on abortion initiative

The European Parliament voted yesterday on a proposal that would allow women from countries with restrictive abortion laws to terminate pregnancies in another EU member state free of charge.

The “My Voice, My Choice” citizens' initiative proposes establishing an EU-funded scheme to cover abortion procedures for women from countries with near-total bans such as Malta and Poland, or where access is limited, including Italy and Croatia.
While Europe has generally moved towards broader abortion access — with Britain decriminalising the procedure and France enshrining it as a constitutional right — support for far-right parties opposed to abortion has grown in several countries.
