DFT seeks to boost rice exports to Japan

The Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) has led a delegation of government and private sector representatives to Japan to strengthen rice trade with Japanese public and private agencies, aiming to maintain Thailand's share of Japan’s rice market at 300,000 tonnes.

Arada Fuangtong, the DFT director-general, said during the visit, which runs from Sept 7-11, the delegation has held discussions with representatives from Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, which determines rice import volumes and oversees rice import auctions; with the Overseas Merchandise Inspection Company (OMIC), responsible for inspecting imported rice quality; as well as major rice importers such as Kitoku Shinryo Co Ltd, Itochu Food Sales and Marketing Co Ltd, and Kanematsu Corporation.
