A temple graft turning point
Bangkok Post
|April 26, 2026
The 50-year jail term handed down last week to the former abbot of Wat Rai Khing is as harsh as it is telling.
-
The court rightly called it a grave offence.More than 2 billion baht — money given in faith for charity and community — was siphoned into gambling, patronage networks and sexual indulgence. A temple once seen as a spiritual centre became a channel for corruption.
Justice has been done in this case. Yet justice alone will not fix a system that remains deeply broken.
Temple corruption is now so rife it scarcely shocks the public. Wat Rai Khing made headlines because of the cleric's senior status and the sheer scale of the theft. But he was hardly alone. Last year brought a string of scandals involving senior monks at different temples, different sums, but the same betrayal of public faith.
The "Sika Golf" sex scandal in 2025 pulled back the curtain on a hidden world of indulgence among senior monks, centred on the same woman. What shocked people was not only the scale - tens of thousands of explicit files and hundreds of millions of baht - but how easily power and status were abused behind closed doors while an image of holiness was used to deceive the faithful.
