Pool care during winter months

Unless you're into ice-baths your pool is probably the furthest thing from your mind as you unpack your cozy jerseys.

But not taking care of your pool during South Africa's colder months could end up costing you more than September's fist-swim pictures that are not quite insta-ready sparkly blue.

Implementing a fail-proof winter-maintenance strategy can save you money and time later in the year. Here's what Giovanni Gaggia, CEO of Real Estate Services South Africa, does at home to protect his pool.

Choose a sunny Saturday morning and brush any algae off the walls and floor and remove organic debris from the water. Experts recommend testing the water for alkalinity and pH balance. “Late summer rain and the overnight weather changes we've been having recently affects the water,” explains Gaggia. Some recommend giving the pool a shock treatment as clear, balanced water is needed for the chlorine to be effective.
