NRIs, tourists to boost demand for beer, whisky and vodka; strict rules drive some to bootleggers
Liquor sales at permit shops in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are expected to jump nearly 25% this Diwali compared to last year, thanks to the influx of NRIs and tourists. Permit shop managers say many visitors, deterred by the Prohibition Department's strict rules, end up buying low-quality liquor from bootleggers instead. With an extended festive break this year, enthusiasts have already begun stocking up.
