Boss Cowley's heart remains in Non-League

HEED FLYING THE FLAG IN SOME STYLE

DANNY COWLEY reckons Gateshead are the best team to watch in the National League – and says he can’t resist listening to Marc White’s colourful post-match interviews.

The former Huddersfield Town and Portsmouth boss, who made his name in NonLeague with the likes of Concord Rangers, Braintree and Lincoln City, is looking to return to the game after leaving Pompey in January. He had been heavily tipped to take the Bradford City job this month.

Cowley and assistant manager sibling Nicky, who played under him at Concord, remain in regular touch with their Non-League roots having taken the Canvey Island side from the Essex Senior League to National League South between 2008 and 2015.

“We watch a lot of National League, we like to go out and stay in touch with what’s going on,” Danny told The NLP.

“We make sure keep in touch with our contacts, the people in the know, because you’re always looking for that rough diamond. Someone like (Wycombe Wanderers striker) Lyle Taylor, who played for Nicky and I at Concord and scored 23 goals in 37 matches in 2009-10.

Smile

“You have to have respect and appreciation for the guys in Non-League who can unearth these players.”
