BEING A WOMAN IN MEXico is tough-if not dangerous. Women earn 16% less than men, and the gender gap in labor-force participation is one of the highest in Latin America. Even more shocking is that 11 women die violently each day, more than twice the rate in the U.S. And yet Claudia Sheinbaum, former mayor of Mexico City and loyal successor to the left-wing incumbent, came out on top following a June 2 vote― meaning Mexico has elected its first female leader, a groundbreaking feat for the nation and the region.
