IMAGES OF SMOLDERING LANDscapes have been coming out of Hawaii as long as there's been photography. But those pictures are about creation: In an archipelago built around volcanoes, eruptions are additions. And when lava brings destruction, it does so slowly, with so much warning, photographers can gather from around the world to document it.
