Launched in August 2014, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the foundation for universal financial inclusion. What began as an ambitious idea has today evolved into a global benchmark, ensuring that banking is not a privilege but a right for every citizen.

Scale of Impact

In just eleven years, PMJDY has grown into the world's largest financial inclusion programme, reshaping India's banking landscape.

Over 56 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened as of August 2025, bringing millions of first-time customers into the formal financial system.

Nearly 67% of these accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas, showing how the scheme has bridged the urban-rural divide.
