Mumbai - Ahmedabad HSR: A transport revolution waited long to be executed

Abstract

With the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Train project nearing completion, it’s worth considering the economic, social, and environmental implications of high-speed rail. The extraordinary economic expansion that India has experienced in recent years has been matched by an increase in the amount of people and products moving through the country. To accommodate this need, new creative modes of transportation must be introduced, with the goal of boosting connectivity and making commuting easier. Once completed, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project would not only drive India into the league of countries with a successful high-speed rail (HSR) system, but it will also connect two important states— Maharashtra and Gujarat—that generate about a third of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
