Finding beauty in the gloom
Psychologies UK
|November 2025
After moving from the always Insta-worthy Northumberland landscape, Caro Giles discovers there's still beauty in the city if you're prepared to take time to seek it out.
I've spent the last few weeks, since moving to the city, familiarising myself with the streets around our basement flat. Autumn has now fully chased summer away for another year, and I'm enjoying wallowing in the nostalgia of crisp early mornings. When I walk up the steps onto our street, chasing two daughters towards the car, the smell in the air and the slight chill on my skin takes me back to the endless school runs I did when we lived in Northumberland.
Although school has always been problematic for some of my children, I did find something reassuring in the drives back and forth from the house towards the sea. Heading out of the town each autumn, the road was lined with trees that burned brightly, leaves like flames that would soon fall to the ground. I watched the sea slowly appear beyond the fields where curlews and oystercatchers pecked at the scrub. Sometimes I would even run down to the beach once my daughters were safely inside the classroom, peel off my clothes and hurl myself into the waves. It's still too early for the wintery sunrises that split the sky open, but I know I will soon feel nostalgic for them too.

COME ON NOW, don't be silly...
When someone we love is anxious, often the first thing we do is to try and make it better. Sometimes that means we try to jolly them along and make them see that there is nothing to worry about, or we throw them a solution.

The world needs spirituality right now
When you meet a neuroscientist, you expect a certain kind of conversation. Complicated terms, difficult theories, and a residual feeling of confusion at the end of it. Not so with Dr Tara Swart.

Healthy mind, HEALTHY BODY?
It had been a long week. Multiple meetings, a work event that meant being out of the house for 16 hours straight, lots of deadlines to meet in-between. I was looking forward to a fun weekend when, wouldn't you know it, I started sneezing, then the dreaded tickly throat started. How ironic, the minute I could finally start to enjoy myself, I got ill.

ARE YOU DEALING WITH A SILENT saboteur?
The story of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who died after eating a baguette containing sesame seeds, has always horrified me. Fully aware of her allergy, she was stringent about checking labels. But the sesame seeds were baked into the dough, and they weren't listed as an ingredient. After taking just a few fateful bites, there was little she could do.
