Pierce Brosnan Sets the Example on How to Transition to a Successful Post-Bond Career
-
Whenever the name James Bond is mentioned, many people will start comparing the various actors who have played the iconic suave, impeccably dressed superspy, ranking them in terms of how “well” they have occupied the role. In the early days, Sean Connery was considered by many to be the one and only James Bond. As the original 007, Connery had a blank canvas and made the role his own. His version of the character was suave, wryly humorous and handy with a gun, with a hint of violence lurking just beneath the surface.
Subsequent Bonds played by Geroge Lazenby (too wooden), Roger Moore (too campy) and Timothy Dalton (too serious) all failed to recapture the lethal combination of suaveness, charm, credibility and humour Connery brought to the role. However, this changed when Pierce Brosnan became the fifth Bond in 1995. Charming, always ready with a quip but professional, Brosnan brought a welcome dab of humour and credibility back to the Bond franchise. He established himself as a Bond for a new generation - a role which he redefined with charm, wit and just the right amount of grit.
Brosnan’s portrayal of the British superspy from 1995 to 2002 propelled him to international stardom, but unlike his predecessors, he never became defined by his stint as Bond. Instead, he progressed into a multifaceted career that saw him take on a myriad of roles as he proved himself to be a versatile actor and a compelling screen presence.
EARLY LIFE
Pierce Brendan Brosnan was born on 16 May 1953, in the industrial and port town of Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland to his mother May Smith, a nurse, and his father, Thomas Brosnan, who was a carpenter. An only child, Brosnan never knew his father as he left the family when Brosnan was just an infant. Brosnan spent a large part of his childhood in the quaint town of Navan, County Meath, which he considers to be his hometown.
