Wyldlands, a three-story home channeling Jim Henson, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Antoni Gaudí, sprouts in a historic town upstate.
The Living Room The artist Doug Meyer used a technique inspired by verre églomisé for the wall panels and applied it to plexiglass. The artwork (left of the door) is by James Vela; the other pieces, and the rug and mural, are by Meyer. The Biedermeier sofa is upholstered in '70s patent vinyl. "When I lived in Miami, there were several shops that had this weird deadstock vinyl," he says.
THE ARTIST Doug Meyer is known for his wildly colorful murals, sculptures, and ceramic paintings. The one-bedroom apartment in Chelsea he shares with husband Meade Ali, an attorney, looks like an extraterrestrial coop. But when Meyer drew up plans for a second home in the Hudson Valley, he felt it was more appropriate to adhere to the quiet style of the historic Federal and Jeffersonian architecture in the area. Then he showed a maquette of the house to the couple's good friend the designer Ghislaine Viñas.
The Kitchen The plexiglass walls were cut and placed on site. The cabinets from Reform are sheathed in colored plexiglass. The artworks are by Meyer."She scrunched up her face and said, 'What? That's not you!'" Meyer says. "And she was right. She kind of freaked me out, and I went home, and I just tore up everything, and I started over again."
