Jean Eric Gassy was a Sydney-based psychiatrist until 1997, when he was deregistered after being diagnosed with a delusional disorder. Five years later, he took revenge on the woman he believed cost him his career. On October 14, 2002, Gassy killed Dr Margaret Tobin as she exited a lift at her office in Adelaide. She was shot four times in the back. At the time, Dr Tobin was the head of South Australia’s mental health service.

The 50-year-old had previously worked with the Southern Sydney Area Health Service, where Gassy was a psychiatrist. She had requested an independent assessment of Gassy’s psychiatric condition to confirm that he was still fit to practice, which eventually led to Gassy being deregistered.

Dr Tobin became the first person on his hit list, along with five other medical professionals. During the investigation, police discovered Gassy had attempted to kill Dr Tobin six months earlier, when she was in Brisbane for a conference.
