A Day In Affalterbach With The AMG GT XX

My journey to the Mercedes-AMG CONCEPT GT XX launch in Affalterbach will stay with me for a long time, not just because of where it took me, but because of what it meant

A Day In Affalterbach With The AMG GT XX

The sun was still up, but the rooftop of AMG's reimagined headquarters in Affalterbach was already pulsing like a midnight rave. Below, a sea of AMGs lined up in perfect grid formation. On stage, Alicia Keys set the tone for the scale of the event under a violet sky. And beside her, the machine everyone had come to see: the Mercedes-AMG CONCEPT GT XX—AMG's loudest-ever statement made in almost complete silence.

But let me back up. This was a thorough repositioning, that offered a glimpse at what the brand’s next chapter will look like—and how it intends to feel.

Affalterbach Rewired

The story started 30,000 feet above sea level. Somewhere between Milan and Stuttgart, I spotted Valtteri Bottas boarding the same connection. A brief hello, a few words exchanged. When one of AMG's top drivers is headed to the same place as you are, the stakes shift instantly.

Affalterbach is usually all business— engineering buildings, wind tunnels, silence broken only by torque curves and test rigs. But not that day. AMG had flipped the switch on its home base and rechristened it “Affasterbach.” Pit lane signage replaced street names. Checkered flags lined the pathways. Multi-storey staff parking became a vertical time capsule of performance history.

The experience was immersive without being overproduced. One section let us attempt an F1-style pit stop on a real car. Another revealed swatches of sustainable fabrics and trim materials destined for future cabins. You could sit through simulated engine sounds or explore experimental user interfaces. And tucked into a corner was a small gift station where guests were handed custom AMG license plates. Mine now hangs above my desk, reminding me of how meticulous the curation was.
