Have you been skipping highlighter? We demystify the step that can lift a fatigued face with just a few swipes.

LIGHT BULB MOMENT

Highlighters have long been loved by glowing goddesses, including Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Gigi Hadid.

When applied strategically on the face, highlighters can transform a complexion from jaded to juicy in a jiffy — provided you know what you're reaching for.

As makeup artist Christine Lim (@christinelxw) points out, the market now stretches from barely there sheens to full-on glossy finishes, and the right choice depends entirely on the effect you want. Before you shop for highlighters, it's essential to know about their different forms.

Powder formulas tend to be the friendliest option for oilier or combination complexions, shares makeup artist Lasalle Lee (@lasalle_lee_jq). They mattify the skin, sidestepping a greasy finish. Creams melt into drier or more mature skin for a seamless and sheer finish, while liquids suit just about everyone, and can even be mixed into a foundation for an allover glow.

There are also stick forms, which are great on-the-go options as they are easy to carry around, mess-free, and can be blended with body heat from your fingertips. Shimmer or glitter formulas exist for the nights you genuinely want to sparkle and stand out from the crowd.

The next thing to know is the application order. A natural and subtle highlight suitable for everyday wear can be achieved with thorough skin preparation, using skincare products and sunblock before applying any makeup, recommends Christine.
