Reaching Out in Service

August 2025

ALEXANDRA CIPRIANO is Vice Principal, Head of Secondary School and a Secondary School English Teacher at Sir Manasseh Meyer International School (SMMIS); here, she shares how students experience service learning through local and international projects.

Reaching Out in Service

SMMIS students are encouraged to see themselves as active contributors to the community through hands-on service experience. As they participate in projects, they learn the value of empathy, responsibility and civic engagement while developing key life skills such as collaboration, adaptability and critical thinking. This prepares students academically, socially and emotionally for the real world.

Year-round, whole school involvement

Service learning at SMMIS is embedded within Enrichment, a weekly timetabled session for the school year. During these sessions, students work under teacher guidance to brainstorm, research and implement service learning projects. They have the autonomy to identify causes they care about and are encouraged to work with community partners to co-create meaningful experiences.
