CLAUDE MONET began painting en plein air after meeting Eugène Boudin in 1857 (Arts & Antiques, July 24, 2024). It would become the driving force of his career, a way to undertake a lifetime's study of how different atmospheres and times of day can radically alter a scene or view. He was then living by the sea in Le Havre, where he had moved from Paris as a boy, but the French capital soon lured him back and he would frequently visit the nearby Fontainebleau forest to work outdoors, each of his canvases necessarily small, so that it could be carried.
