Go big or go (close to) home

Don't have the time or budget for a trip abroad - or even across the country? There are so many cool places to stay on your doorstep. Robyn MacLarty found a few gems that are closer than you think...

THE FOREST CAMP, PLATBOS FOREST CABINS

Where? Just outside Gansbaai.

Why go? Tucked away in South Africa's southern-most indigenous forest, this enchanting, off-grid camp is completely private, centred around a magnificent and ancient white stinkwood tree estimated to be close to 1 000 years old. There are two tented units that each sleep two (only 45m apart, so perhaps not suitable for snorers), a fully equipped kitchen cabin, open-air shower, and, in the centre, a fireplace. Take a wander through the labyrinthine pathways, climb to the top of the lookout tower for a bird's-eye view over the treetops, or simply soak up the sounds of nature while you catch up on some reading (or take a nap) in the camp hammock.

How far? 2.5 hours' drive from Cape Town.

How much? From R1 200 for the entire camp. Sleeps 4.

OU RIETDAK, BLUEBELL FARM COTTAGES

Where? Just outside Stanford, Western Cape.

Why go? Located on a working farm, this spacious old 'plaashuis' was built in the 1800s and has been lovingly restored and decorated in a charming shabby-chic style. Wooden floors, a cosy fireplace and a spacious stoep that overlooks a swimming pool set in the sprawling garden, make this the perfect base from which to explore the wine farms, beaches, rivers and fynbos reserve in the area. Meals and prepacked picnics are available on request.

How far? About 2 hours' drive from Cape Town.
