For over 120 years, The Guardian's Country Diary has delivered a daily portrait of an intimate view of the countryside (or nature, wherever we find it) from across Britain.
Beloved by its readers and writers alike, it is the oldest daily newspaper column in the world.
Late last year, a rare gathering of diarists met on the Longshaw Estate in the Peak District, to walk and celebrate a new anthology, Under the Changing Skies a 'best of' compilation of Country Diary entries from 2018-2024. Much time was spent considering both the broad views of the Peaks and the fascinating castles and heat of wood ant's nests. We discuss with a wry fondness how each of us manage the discipline needed to describe an experience in nature in just 350 words, while leaving room for the reader to 'breathe'.
