But without the right preparation and technique, it’s just as easy to end up with streaks, peeling paint, or premature fading. This step-by-step guide walks you through how to paint both indoor and outdoor surfaces like a pro, while avoiding the most common DIY mistakes.

Tools and materials needed
Basic tools:
- Drop cloths or plastic sheeting
- Painter's tape
- Paint rollers (3/8” nap for smooth walls; 3/4” nap for textured or outdoor surfaces)
- Roller trays
- Angled paintbrush (50 -65mm)
- Extension pole for rollers (especially outdoors or ceilings)
- Ladder
- Putty knife or scraper
- Sandpaper (120-220 grit) or sanding block
- Bucket and sponge or cloths
- Paint can opener and stir sticks
Materials:
- Primer (indoor/outdoor specific)
- Interior or exterior paint (latex or acrylic-based)
- Caulk (paintable, for cracks/gaps)
- Wood filler or wall patching compound
- Mild detergent (for cleaning walls)
- Sealant (for outdoor durability)
PART 1: Indoor Painting
Step 1: Prep your space
- Move furniture or cover it with plastic sheets.
- Protect floors using canvas drop cloths (they won't slip like plastic).
- Clean the walls with a damp sponge and mild detergent to remove dust, grease, or cobwebs.
- Fix any damage: Patch holes or cracks, sand smooth, and wipe clean.
- Tape edges: Use painter's tape around windows, trim, baseboards, and electrical outlets.
