Yaahvi's latest lighting collection, Lagori, brings play into the process
-
If you've ever paused to watch a game of lagori break out in a neighbourhood bylane, the reference in Yaahvi's new lighting collection might feel instantly familiar. For founder Nikita Bansal, the game of seven stones was a childhood staple in Assam. "I was always fascinated by how the stack rose and fell and how it was rebuilt again and again. That rhythm of creating, breaking, and building stayed with me," she shares. Her Lagori collection moulds that memory and the celebration of play, teamwork, and joy - into sculptural lighting handmade in glass and metal. With each piece feeling on the brink of motion, the series is a kinetic expression of Yaahvi's ongoing pursuit to shape craft into contemporary art.
How did the game of lagori spark these forms?
The game and the collection brought me back to a sense of play that often gets lost in the structure and rigour of design. It let me reintroduce childlike spontaneity into the process. The game is all about creation and collapse, and I had to hold that same tension while shaping each stack. It's also full of anticipation, camaraderie, and strategic unpredictability and some of the collection's most compelling forms emerged from those same moments of uncertainty and play.
How did your material explorations shape Lagori's identity?
