JAYSHREE PODDAR
DIRECTOR OF DESIGN, HIMATSINGKA ATMOSPHERE SEIDE AND
After graduating from the National Institute of Design (NID), I moved to Bangalore in 1986 from Kolkata. I could have joined the crafts sector or a traditional textile mill, but my brother-in-law Dinesh Himatsingka was setting up Himatsingka Seide Ltd near Bengaluru. He urged me to join the company as the Director of Design and this was a significant decision with amazing consequences. I am with this organisation since its early days of operation and 36 years in this city have been rather calm yet stimulating. The aspect I find enlivening is that the city leaves you alone–to do your own thing. It offers lush green spaces, and public spaces that are beautiful. Without the overbearing presence of a Delhi or Mumbai– The city is like balm for the soul. Quiet yet bustling with energy. Bengaluru allows me to dwell in my space, which allows me to find inspiration within. My lifestyle here is one of independent living and outlook. The same qualities are carried very directly into my thought process and creating at work. I don’t however like that we have traffic jams and bad roads, but one has learnt to take it in one’s stride.
