LIFT THE SPIRITS

The styling at this Mexico City retreat is as smooth as the drink it's named after, with concrete finishes poured as freely as mezcal

It's perhaps not surprising that a large bar in a welcoming shade of terracotta tile takes centre stage in this Mexico City home. It is, after all, called Casa Mezcal, named after the traditional local tequila, distilled from a specific species of agave plant. As it happens, every corner of this home is given over to hedonism in some way, from the cinema room to the plunge pool, from the sun-baked roof terrace to the squashy built-in sofas in the ground-floor den. And, in fact, this soothingly smooth concrete home in a leafy enclave of the Mexican capital was once a mezcal tasting room, a place for people to gather and, well, drink and be merry. 'We really saw the soul of the space,' says Valérie Boerma, co-founder of Dutch interior design and architecture studio Barde vanVoltt, who oversaw the conversion into a peaceful residential home.
