Megan and Ronan wanted to replace the kitchen in their Greystones home with an open-plan design better suited to busy family life.

Colour Confident

The previous kitchen in this detached home was a classic U-shape with cabinets along three walls and after seven years in their house the owners were ready for a change.

'I'm American and used to that open-plan style of design,' explains Megan. 'We wanted a kitchen that we could really live in. The previous design had a large amount of wasted space in the middle - but not large enough to put in an island or peninsula. I disliked that you were also quite isolated when cooking or clearing up. We wanted something that brought everything together in a much more dynamic and social way.'

An island and a mudroom were at the top of Megan and Ronan's wishlist and working with Ben Kerrigan at Kerwood Design they were able to remodel the kitchen without any need for an extension.

Ben opened the kitchen up into the living room to create a brighter, more open space and where the old kitchen spanned three walls, he suggested getting rid of the one wall that was hindering the design.

Knocking out that wall in turn created another storage opportunity and around the corner from the tall wall of cabinetry is a run of built-in cabinetry for coat storage.

Megan said, 'Our close friends recommended Kerwood and once we stepped foot in their showroom and met the team we were immediately sold. We loved their bespoke approach and collaborative style.
