A Work of Art

September 2022

The owners of this new build have blended their love of contemporary design and art into this traditional Georgian home set amongst beautiful countryside in Portadown.

A Work of Art

While they had never considered a self-build before, these homeowners were so impressed with the site that they knew they had to take on the challenge. Prior to this we were living in a development of 12 houses in the area, but when the estate agent made us aware of this site the opportunity to live surrounded by this beautiful countryside was too tempting to pass up. At our stage in life we seem to have upsized rather than downsized, but we have built with the future in mind and the house can easily be adapted to suit our needs.

'When we purchased the site it already had planning permission for a Georgian build and we worked with the architect to amend the design, which included increasing the square footage and adding a more contemporary finish to the rear of the house. We had been travelling in South Africa and really admired the style of the homes we saw there but recognised this would not suit our surroundings. However, we were able to retain a traditional Georgian facade to the front but opt for a more contemporary look to the back with the floor to ceiling glass windows and doors that take full advantage of the surrounding views.'

The building work commenced on 31st March 2021 and the couple have just recently moved in. From start to finish it took about a year and now we just have the landscaping to finish off which we hope to have completed by early autumn. Also the adjoining garage offers first floor living space and we have plans to convert this into a games room which we can enjoy with our grandchildren.'
