• The right pillow differs for everyone, and a lot of it depends on how we sleep. Your usual sleeping position is key to your pillow choice, because this affects the pillow height (also known as loft) that you need. Generally speaking, your pillow should hold your head in the same position as it would be if you were standing with good posture. If your pillow is too low, your head is at risk of falling back and creating pressure in the neck. However, if it's too high, you may wake up to find that your neck muscles feel stiff.

• If you sleep on your side, you are likely to benefit from a firm pillow to keep your head lifted. Back sleepers require a medium-firm pillow to cushion the back of the head, while a front sleeper will need a softer pillow to keep the neck close to the mattress.

• Some pillow manufacturers will offer a sleep trial, which means that you buy the pillow and then have a set number of nights to try sleeping on the pillow on your own bed. Terms and conditions may apply, but if you don't like the pillow, you can usually return it for a refund within the trial period, or swap it for an alternative one. Pillows aren't one-size-fits-all, so make the most of this if it's offered.
