Set the scene with cosy lighting and seating to help guests feel settled, and prepare drinks and snacks in advance for ease.

Finding the right furniture

Do think about investing in pieces that will last longer. 'Furniture designed for a life outside won't need to be brought indoors,' says Reilly, so picking the right pieces is key. If space allows, an extendable table and chair set is a practical option. 'You can always use extra dining chairs in other parts of the garden, such as an outdoor reading nook, until needed,' suggests Reilly
