In the North Carolina mountains, one designer created her family's dream getaway.

BEYOND the PINES

GUEST BEDROOM

Originally, only the living room had wood on the walls, but Ashley Gilbreath clad every room of the cabin in pine to make it feel “old and mountainy.”

Headboard: custom, in Heather Chadduck Textiles fabric.

Sconce: Visual Comfort & Co.

Rug: From Jaipur With Love.

“In the mountains, there’s not a lot of flat space to throw a football,” Gilbreath says, so she created this “place to hang out and take in the woodland views.” Now, “the kids are always kicking a soccer ball or swinging. It’s one of my favorite parts of the house.” Swings: Etsy

Call her a rule breaker.

While many designers tend to follow a specific—but varied—color scheme from room to room, few clients would give them carte blanche to swathe a whole space in the same shade of green. Luckily for Ashley Gilbreath, she was both the client and the designer when it came to the vacation home she shares with her husband, three kids, and their dog, Bo, in Cashiers, North Carolina. In other words, she got to make every creative call—starting with the color palette.
