A stunning tub and a bespoke, hand-painted mural steal the scene in this gorgeous, colourful bathroomÂ

This artistic bathroom is part of a renovation undertaken by interior designer Naomi Astley Clarke and Smith & Brooke Architects, in a six-bedroom townhouse in west London owned by a busy family. Most of it is done out in cool, monochrome, geometric prints – but tucked away on the top floor is this imaginative oasis.
“It’s a family bathroom,” explains Clarke, “but it’s mainly used by the three girls: two teenagers and a little one.” That already sounds like a tough brief; devising a room for one teenager is hard enough, let alone two, never mind ensuring it’s fun for the younger sister as well. The designer, however, was unfazed, coming up with a creative mix of grown-up pieces and a playful mural. “The latter was painted by Nancy Daniell. It’s a savannah scene with completely un-geographical animals in it,” she chuckles. “We just added animals we liked, so there are cheetahs and flamingos dotted about.”

TASTEMAKER CAROLINE EDEN
âI always say they're like postcards,â says Caroline Eden of her wildly success-ful âcolour trilogyâ series of travelogue-cookbooks charting her adventures through Eastern Europe and Central Asia. âThey're just my written interpretations of things I've eaten and places I've seen on my travels, with a smattering of recipes throughout,â she explains. Green Mountains (ÂŁ28, Quadrille), the final instalment, sees Caroline walking the South Caucasus, from Armenia through Georgia and on to the Black Sea. Cultural commentary, history and cooking are woven together to genre-defying effect, revealing not only how to make authentic dishes from this part of the world (such as lamb with plums, green beans and cinnamon, and courgettes with Georgian spices and walnuts, pictured), but the world events that have shaped these countries and their rich culinary heritage. âReaders aren't intimidated by food in the same way they might be by the history of the Soviet Union,â explains Caroline. âIt is the ideal gateway for telling these big, complicated stories.â
